Blood Sugar has been a very self indulgent for made for fun comic and I hope you enjoy it. It’s about sisters who go trick or treating with a spirit and prank vampires out of their neighborhood. The theme of the fifth Object Head Zine is “SUPERSTITION” or simply Good luck/Bad luck.

Show us your tidbits of folktales, little stories you believed in that would change your luck, or your favourite local urban legends. As with the 3rd edition, this can be a little flexible - you can draw either object heads relating to folklore items, good luck/bad luck items or have them put into superstitious/folklore situations! It can be either scary or cutesy or even a mix of both! You may include monsters, but please keep object heads the focus of your piece.

This book will feature 45 people I’ve selected, plus 25 open slots available to the public for a total of 70 participants! This year’s zine is a PAID OPPORTUNITY of $100 CAD (approx. $80 USD) per page. Participants will be paid as soon as they complete their piece (give or take a week for paypal to transfer funds). There will be a preorder sale to cover the costs of printing and shipping.

The 45 pre-selected participants are:

Potentialforart | This is Hannako | Rachel Stolberg | MannyAndys | Rezllen/Robin Crew | Corviday | Modmad | Nighto | Haley/Ivan Kasof | Aaron Alexovich  | Miru/Inktrashing | Cacoethic & Lenalis | 2-ee | ArticBleu | Kimberly Wang | Bri R. | Amelia Carmela Zuccaro | Shibara | Francis M | John Gorillaprutt | Lye Lawrence | Emily Gossmann | Angelo W | Louise Kay Uy (Kalkie) | Coey Kuhn | Britney Brent | Vee (Cassandra) | Holeyness | Kiana McMillian | TigerToony | Taylor Robin | Naomi Romero | RadJinja (Cathy A.) | Evan Dahm | Hobermen | Tess Stone  |  Crypto |  Cosmicloak  | ENDO | Verface | ElliEspy | MerriMonster | Kaley Bales | Fenris Lansing | Slitherbot

The guidelines are as follows:

  • Illustration-quality works in either digital or traditional mediums. Both colour and b/w acceptable; background required. *BG can be as simple as a pattern or colour block!
  • 6”x9”, 300 DPI illustrations with a 1/8th inch bleed (FINAL DIMENSIONS SHOULD BE 6.25” x 9.25”) Works must be in CMYK, a template will be provided via email if you are selected. Works will be in a vertical format only.
  • 15 slots are open for a 1-4 page comic. A separate portfolio of your comic works must be sent in for consideration.
  • At least one (1) work in progress picture should be sent in with your final illustration/comic.
  • For consistency’s sake, keep faces to a minimum (You can have eye(s) or you can have mouth(s) but don’t have both in a humanoid arrangement.)
  • Original characters only (yours or your friends’).
  • You can include humans/monsters as long as there’s a 1:1 object head to human/monster ratio.
  • This book is for all ages. PG-13 content at the most! Cartoon violence and blood are acceptable, but realistic gore is NOT. Use your common sense. If you’re unsure, run the idea by me.
  • Completed illustrations/comics must be sent as a flattened psd or tiff file.

To apply, please submit:

  • Examples of your work (art blog/tag, homepage, etc). If you wish to submit a comic, please provide examples of your comic work as well. Object heads are not required in your portfolio but always welcome.
  • The name you want to be credited with
  • The website you want to be linked on the credits page
  • The email you want to be displayed on the credits page (optional)
  • If you have an idea of what superstitious concept you want to portray, feel free to describe it in a few sentences as well. This is Not Essential, however.

There are only 15 slots for comics available due to page count space so if you apply for a comic space, and you are selected, you may not be picked for comics but instead illustration!

Please send this information to objectheadzine (at) hotmail (dot) com, plus any questions you may have about the zine. I’ll do my best to reply promptly. If you haven’t received a response from me regarding your application in a few days, please send it again. There are a few essential questions answered over at the FAQ. There is also a twitter account for the zine for frequent updates and WIPs of the book! For more constant feedback/information, feel free to join the Object head Zine Discord chat (now working correctly). There is also a useful timeline of the zine process found on the top bar of the tumblr account or Here.

Applications are due May 2nd, 2018, 11:59 PM, PST.

Anonymous asked: Uncle Mod, I have a question and I direct it toward you because you always seem to have a nugget of wisdom to offer. Do you think object head characters are better kept to a visual medium? Sorry if I come across as blunt (quite frankly I'm not sure how to be anything but blunt). Take your time answering, if you feel like answering, and I wish you nothing but the best luck in all your endeavors. Sincerely, an anon who loves object heads but can only write.

I think you can do whatever the heck you want, and a character that’s described well can look like anything! In fact, it’s probably even cooler, because the way one person imagines, say, a person with a clock for a head, will almost certainly be different from someone else’s idea of that same object. I don’t think you should feel object heads are only limited to pictures, any more than any other type of character is!

objectheadzine:

Part 5, I think I’m only missing 2 pictures? (My own book was a test page for inking and testing what would work so not really worth showing off.) Hopefully they’ll be shown soon!

FLORA AND FUNGAL is our topic for the Object Head Zine 2018 edition! Explore the depths of your forests, the backyard woods, your balcony garden. ALL submissions will be accepted so long as they follow the guidelines below. Each person has a limit of up to 3 submissions. This will be a DIGITAL ZINE ONLY and will be available free upon completion (donation optional). The guidelines are as follow:

  • Illustration-quality works in either digital or traditional mediums. Both colour and b/w acceptable; background required. *BG can be as simple as a pattern or colour block! Avoid utilizing a camera to submit your images, please use a scanner.
  • The default size will be 6″x9″, 300 dpi (1800px x 2700px) but feel free to go larger or smaller, so long as it follows those proportions. Please work in a vertical format.
  • For consistency’s sake, keep faces to a minimum (You can have eye(s) or you can have mouth(s) but don’t have both in a humanoid arrangement.)
  • Please go for original characters (or fanart of your friend’s characters) and not so much established floral object heads.
  • If you want to include humans, that’s fine as well but keep the ratio of people to object heads 1:1. Same goes for non-plant/fungal object heads. If you want to include both non-plant/fungal and humans in your image, make sure the majority goes to floral object heads!
  • Content should be at most PG-13: Romance is fine but after hours business should not be implied, Blood is fine but no gore. In the end, use your common sense.

Feel free to draw a comic or just an illustration! A comic counts as one submission.

Note that if a submission does not meet the above guidelines, I will either reject your submission or suggest improvements that would help your piece fulfill them. Please email me at objectheadzine(@)hotmail(.)com if you have any further questions and I’ll do my best to reply promptly. If you do not receive a message from me within a few days, please send it again. We’re also available on twitter. Join us as well on the official Object Head Zine discord chat! Click here to be invited into the chat.

Final pieces submitted should be either in PNG or a one layer PSD file format. Also send in your email/website/name you’d like to be credited as. (Feel free to omit emails if that is more comfortable). When you’ve finished your piece(s), you are allowed to post them to your blogs as long as you link back to the zine blog!

Feel free to sign up for the mailing list if you want to keep up with object head zine related updates.

THE DUE DATE FOR SUBMISSIONS IS NOVEMBER 2ND.
