So there’s a plot of land right on Robson’s street that has been bought and is being cleared out for a new building, but as they were taking apart the old building something very special was found; an old hand-painted advert for Harold Lloyd’s very first full feature, Grandma’s Boy.

Obviously I sort of flipped out when I saw it. Unfortunately the sun was on the wrong side so these aren’t very good but it really is a beauty, and the colours are just as they were because it’s been covered up for so long! I might try again in the morning tomorrow if the weather is good again :)

Sort of uncanny timing too, what with The Artist, Morris Lessmore and HUGO causing a trend of interest in silent movies…

I LOVE YOU.

The English language is like London: proudly barbaric yet deeply civilised, too, common yet royal, vulgar yet processional, sacred yet profane: each sentence we produce, whether we know it or not, is a mongrel mouthful of Chaucerian, Shakespearean, Miltonic, Johnsonian, Dickensian and American. Military, naval, legal, corporate, criminal, jazz, rap and ghetto discourses are mingled at every turn. The French language, like Paris, has attempted, through its Academy, to retain its purity, to fight the advancing tides of franglais and international prefabrication. English, by comparison, is a shameless whore.

This makes me happy and very inclined to go out and find a carousel.

I’m sure we could fit one in the front room if we shove the sofa back a bit.
