Well first sh-shut up you can’t make me happy by saying things like that baka.

Secondly yes, you can, I love strange questions, mostly because I am so very, very strange. I have a lot of very strange habits and hobbies, but being an animator one of my favourite strange things is what I call ‘people watching’. More specifically; watching little nuances that make people who they are, that reveal things about them. Sometimes it’s how they walk, sometimes it’s how they light a cigarette, lick their fingers before they turn a page, tilt their head forward when they’re thinking how to put something politely or back when they’re trying to remember. I’ve been able to deduce that someone had a spinal injury from their limp and that someone had recently lost their ring just from watching how they behaved.

One of my favourite responses to analyze is when someone is eating something new or really delicious for the first time. Everyone reacts differently, but humans are odd because they try to disguise things a lot of the time; with food, they can’t. It’s much harder to hide what you think about a piece of food, especially in the first few microseconds that you take a bite. It’s literally a chemical reaction, so it’s much easier to see a true response. Afterwards of course you have the 'acting’ part, pretending you like it or aren’t so impressed; but it’s actually the genuine, involuntary movements of people’s faces that intrigue me.

Aka I am a creepy fuck and like watching people eat nice things. Sue me.

RGB loves puns, but only if he’s the one making them.

I have… no idea. I never started TPoH with the intention of profiting from it. Maybe some day, but I would also have to discuss the matter with Nate because I don’t want to profit from Madras because she’s his baby :C It would be kind of neat to have a few copies to throw at potential job places though, so who knows?

image

Well well, someone has sharp eyes.

It was indeed. You’ll see a lot of references to different films and stories throughout TPoH (the yellow road motif has already been flogged to death for you ahaha). Of course, it’s more the selection of lines that I was having fun with.

Yes.

Half Indian half English. Her mother was from Kolkata and her father was from Wilmslow. They met when Hero’s mother moved to Manchester to fill out a position in a local newspaper firm.

RGB is basically an evasive bugger and bad at admitting things, so it’s mostly that he just doesn’t want to, although a lot of the time he does that is because it would be ‘tactically inadvisable’ to tell the truth from his standpoint.

Hee, I was hoping that might confuse people. In actuality the change is simpler than you might think, and will be explained eventually.

As regards the grayscale comment, however, it’s true that he is very different in that state.

Very.

image

Sure thing- he’s from Norfolk, studied fine art in Edinburgh for three years and has a tendency to forget his umbrella.

Hero lived a very happy, normal life in Manchester with her mother and father. Her mother is an editorial writer and her father is a janitor. She had two pet guinea-pigs called Bubble and Squeak.

In their respective films, naturally. Arthur is an odd job man, the reason being that his work so often seems to end in a disastrous fashion (goodness knows why). Mesi is the first mate of an intergalactic exploration ship, and works alongside the famous Captain Horatio Drake, who isn’t very famed for his diplomacy or tact but has a very strong arm and nice hair.

Start saying hyena then put a t in the way (sounds like ‘height’ I suppose).

I’m not sure tbh OKAY SO HE’S AN OBJECT-HEAD THERIOCEPHALY DUDE COOL.

Sort of yes sort of no, been called Mod or certainly a mod for a long time and I like the culture, but yes I am… associated with him, for various reasons =__=

Mother of god I have no idea mostly because I can’t picture either one of them wanting kids in the first place and RGB isn’t a biological entity exactly but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

Yes.

:)

(hehe… knobs)

ALL OF THEM er but I guess if you’re starting out you may want to try the two-reelers, they’re only twenty minutes. Two of my personal favourites are The Scarecrow and Neighbours. As for a full feature my favourite is Sherlock Jr but they’re all incredible.

As I said before, if I feel like it and I get a really good idea, I will. The thing is WALL-E was comparatively easy due to the fact he was based on Buster Keaton- very expressive and slightly sad eyes, small, cute and versatile build. The other two have no attachment to humans at all for me.

Also, another reason for drawing WALL-E was that I wanted to make expression icons, as I may be writing as him in the future… (*cough*rpnerd*cough*)

Interesting that you noticed that. One of the traits of RGB (that will become more apparent as the story proceeds) is that, although he likes to give off a sense of class and sophistication, he’s a complete sham artist. He’s all about false impressions and selling something that isn’t there, illusions and pretty words. TPoH itself is riddled with the message that things are never what they seem.

So, he gives the impression that he has immaculate taste by wearing suspenders and spats, but if you look closley the fastenings are cheap, and the spats are actually just a part of his shoes- they aren’t the genuine article. Nothing about RGB is.

TL:DR- when is imitation not the ultimate form of flattery?

(Answering this publicly because I’ve had similar asks before and it’s something I might as well cover for everyone. As for you zilliah, you don’t have to show me the work in question and I’m not mad at all- this is something that happens to every artist who experiments, and every artist should experiment.)

If you’re feeling uncomfortable with your work, then that’s a sign that you should take a step back and evaluate it; stop. Look. Think. What it is about it that is making you feel that way?

Learning new styles is very good for you artistically, but it isn’t the same as copying styles- of course, that is how you learn about new styles, in the beginning, but it’s crucial to move forwards from simple imitation and go on to use it as inspiration. Pick up the traits from different methods that you like and smush them together to make something new. Find something else you like, do it again. ‘The best artists steal’ doesn’t mean copyright infringement or being lazy pays off, it means you have to steal knowledge and convert it into something original. You have to steal intelligently. Do so, and you can commit the perfect crime- you can become an inspiration yourself.

Never post something that worries you. Sometimes it’s tempting to, simply because you’ve drawn it, but hold back, look at it, look for what worries you; there will be a reason for it. Do not be lazy. Do not ignore that uncomfortable feeling. Do not pass it off as you being silly. Trust your instincts. Find the reason. Learn.

If you feel as if you’ve become stuck in a rut or can’t get away from a style, try going in a completely different direction; do some more drawings in a totally different technique or a new medium, go back to your 'old’ style, see what you’ve learned that you can apply, find your groove.

Basically, if you feel like something looks too much like someone else’s work, then it isn’t your work. I don’t mean that in the sense that they will hunt you down and skin you for copying them, I mean that it will not feel right for you, and will never feel right until you figure out what the problem is. Nobody is going to force you to, the challenge is to overcome the inclination to let it be because hopefully nobody will notice. Don’t give in to apathy; you’re better than that, prove it.

Don’t limit yourself to one style, but don’t copy- learn. Kick your butt back into drawing pictures that feel like your own work so you can shove it in people’s faces and say OI. LOOK AT WHAT I DID. I DID THIS.

Righto, carry on then.
