Anonymous asked: sorry but I'm new- who are those characters, the guy with the TV head and the kid? are they your characters? :o
they are! they’re from a webcomic I write called The Property of Hate which is very weird and updates once a week which is horrifyingly slow but I’m working on that :|b
also if any more of you are new followers and you’re curious there’s some info about me and some of my other stuff in the FAQ!
Anonymous asked: my teacher says that I can't design characters with a good range of expressions without them having a face, do you think that's right?
Hard question; if this is an exercise for the purpose of learning to draw expressions they’re probably trying to help you, so keep working on those faces! It’ll be good for you in the long run, but in terms of declaring characters that don’t have faces to be void or incapable of expression I would argue against that very strongly; body language, gesture, and timing are just as if not more important than facial expressions!
Don’t let conventions limit your imagination, in terms of character design or anything else. Giving yourself boundaries can be helpful (if you get a brief for a character design you should try to follow it), and can be constructive in channeling direction, but it can also be horribly stunting and condemn you to having a narrow field of vision in what is acceptable in your and other people’s work. It all depends on context, but no, personally I don’t think that statement is ‘right’ at all.
Anonymous asked: what are your hairs looking like today? :D
my hairs are looking like this

and I can’t do a damned thing with them
Anonymous asked: can I ask- do your characters go through a lot of changes? or do you just land on the 'right' design and stick with it?
Actually it’s a bit of both! All designs change over time, even if it’s just due to the artist getting better at drawing. For me, some characters appear out of nowhere, while some have to be chiseled away at before I feel like they really look like themselves. People who have been following me since the start will know that RGB has more or less remained the same in essence, and he was a pretty spontaneous drawing! Hero took me a few goes to get her right, but I had a good general idea of the elements to put together (round shapes, toy-like, massive eyes etc.). I knew who she was already, so it wasn’t like I was starting with a blank canvas.
A character who took more honing was Dial- he had a very different look altogether at the beginning! It’s usually the character or personality which is the grounding constant for me, I just had to keep redrawing him until I ‘found’ what he looked like. It’s hard to explain, but sometimes you draw a bunch of versions of a character, and suddenly you get this one drawing and you’re just like; “yeah, that’s him, that’s this person.” Maybe I’ll release those first sketches and the evolution of Dial’s design some time (perhaps when I start up a patreon!), so you can see just how much faffing about that took. The same happened with Arthur- I just had to keep trying until I got to that magical ‘DING!’ moment.
In contrast, Julienne was one where she just popped into my head and stayed more or less the same since day one. The only thing that changed was that originally she had normal ballet shoes, but when I realized she should be made of sugar and chocolate it just made sense to have her ‘feet’ and ‘head’ made of knives; hence why I changed her name to Julienne (originally it was going to be Julliard, after the school, so I still feel like the name stemmed from dance aspect of her).
Anonymous asked: Curious, what would Hero's, RGB's, and your western zodiac signs be?
Hero is an Aquarius (February 10th), RGB is a Gemini (May 21st) :D
oh and I’m a Pisces sorry missed that the first time
Anonymous asked: What are RGB and Hero's zodiac animals? I did a little research and I like to think RGB may be a snake and Hero is a rat. By the way, what's YOUR zodiac animal?
Well congratulations, you’re dead on with Hero! She is indeed a rat (born in 1996), but RGB is actually a rooster (born inaahHAHHAHAHYOUREALLY THINK I’M GOING TO SAY) so yes, there you have it!
as for me I was born in a year of the dragon (1988 baby, yeah)
Anonymous asked: I was wondering, you get a lot of comments and asks about the comic and your work, but are there any that you get a lot that you dislike? just want to avoid any pet peeves or words you don't enjoy :'D
What an interesting question! Honestly most of the messages I get are unique and very lovely, and really just anyone taking the time so say a nice thing in whatever way they choose is amazing so I’m always grateful even if I can’t get around to answering them all.
If I really had to pick one thing that people say/have said which irritates me it would be the classic “what kind of drugs were you on when you wrote this/you must have been high to come up with this stuff” comment. It’s not just when people say it about my work either; it gets said about a lot of surreal art and imaginative things in general, and it just makes me incredibly sad to think that a person would suppose you have to be influenced by drugs to come up with anything remotely wild or unusual.
It says more about the commenter than the artist, I know, and I guess it’s largely meant as a joke, but it still sucks the innocent fun out of the work and takes the credit of having an independently functioning brain away from the artist. It also kind of makes me worry that some people really do suppose that the only way they can make something wacky and imaginative is to take something, which is nonsense and for the record I have never taken anything stronger than ibuprofen. Heck I don’t even like the taste of alcohol I am literally a giant goober child- you want to see me high just give me some sherbet and a box set of cartoons that’ll do it.
So yeah TL:DR I ain’t hating on anyone’s lifestyle choices just don’t say that junk it cheeses a lot of us creative types off
Anonymous asked: Where is Julienne from? Or, I guess, if she had ever been a human from our world where would she be from?
The Ivory Coast/the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire
Anonymous asked: so I know Julienne's wings are cotton candy and the knives are chocolate, and Hero likes her voice, so does that mean her voice is 'sugary'? Also, what are the ribbons made of- are they edible too?
I prefer to think of her voice as sounding rich and ‘chocolatey’, but it’s up to your own interpretation really! Julienne’s ribbons are made of a sort of a hybrid between strawberry laces and fruit-by-the-foot, so yes, they are also made out of candy!
Anonymous asked: is it bad that I kind of want you to meet Alex and fall in friend with him
I THOUGHT THAT WAS GOING TO END IN A TOTALLY DIFFERENT WAY BUT THIS WORKED OUT SO ADORABLE AND I’M REALLY HAPPY ABOUT THAT no anon please want that that’s so super cute I love you for wanting such a radical nice thing whichwillneverhappenbutwecandream :’D
