my hands hurt but my hair is silly so this was a nice distraction

Anonymous asked: Things I need to know about Mr. Case: 1)His hot beverage of choice and how he takes it 2)Any catch phrases he has 3)How badly he needs a hug 4)Regardless of the previous question's answer, can I give him a hug, bc he kind of seems like the type to not be comfortable with hugs from strangers but he also looks very huggable, and thank you for your time.

1) regular English Breakfast tea (milk no sugar) but he’s also partial to an ovaltine

2) not that I have thought up yet BUT I’m sure it’ll happen (edit: someone offered “I’m on the case!” and damn that’s great)

3) actually yes always all the time

4) he’s shy of offering them but never of receiving them

this is old but I still get asked this a lot and this is still the only answer I can give

Anonymous asked: okay so I have been reading back through all the doodle comics you've made that I have loved (all of them), and the thing that always gets me is how you get the 'tone' of them right. Like, on the nose this-could-be-in-this-show right; and they're completely different! Gravity Falls, Osomatsu-san, Wander Over Yonder, Ace Attorney... hell, THAT comic felt more real than the game's actual ending! So... How do you do that? Do you have any advice on that part of writing? :o

Gosh that’s very awesome to hear, that you feel that way? Because I do try very hard to do that! However I am not really sure about how to advise on it, which sounds lame but it’s true! I suppose mostly it’s practice, and I did used to do a lot of RP writing, which requires getting into the skin of a character so completely that you can respond in their ‘voice’ almost without thinking. It was a great exercise for spontaneous plot reaction too- and really that is all a story is. You put a character, who is and exists and has feelings and a history, into a situation; you let the character respond to that situation, and that is how the story happens. If you put a character into a situation and force the outcome then it won’t feel right, no matter how many lens flares and explosions you put in; the motions of the characters have to come from the emotions of the characters, and I guess every show, game and movie has their own emotional vibe and sense of timing as well? Treat the world as a character: how does it breathe? Space and time are inherently linked, perhaps we can say that every ‘world’ has its own form of time; so how does that space dictate the timing of the story you want to write? Maybe that’s nonsense. Maybe I don’t care.

Basically get out there and try and try and get it wrong until you get it right!

Anonymous asked: hi, sorry I know this is kind of a selfish question but, with TPoH it seems like a lot of the characters are from all over the world and I was wondering- is there going to be a Mexican character? it's okay if there isn't I was just, I'm curious ( also much love to you and your country I am sorry you and your generation feel so bad it wasn't your fault this all happened )

oh shucks bless you anon, that’s not selfish and thank you for the kind words I am starting to get back on my feet with all that nonsense, anyway as for your question I can actually say, yes! there is! the thing is he won’t appear for a long time yet so I almost feel bad for letting it slip but I love him (is it bad etiquette for a writer to say that?) so I hope you like him too :’D

Anonymous asked: What pronouns should we use for Assok?

Assok is Assok! So usually I just say “Assok is/was/whatever-” But using ‘they’ or alternating between he/she is fine :D

Anonymous asked: hey so I'm thinking of supporting you on patreon, but what's the difference between 20 and 10 dollar rewards? :O

ooh! thank you for considering it :D there’s a summary on patreon but basically;

10 dollar supporters get WIP sketches and that sort of behind-the-scenes material for TPoH/TPatJ/other stories that I don’t post on tumblr, and sometimes one-off sketches that I just haven’t put up anywhere else.

The 20 dollars supporters get those, and step by step guides/explanations behind comic method things that I pile together, either on request or just off the cuff (like how I colour, use hands, panel etc.) I’m also starting to post things like little scenes that got cut out of the comic due to editing or had to be altered as I got to know the work better- here’s a small part of one I just posted!

Anonymous asked: are ghosts really that popular in the UK?

heavens, yes! almost every town I’ve visited has some story or another relating to spirits, or at least has a story involving a gruesome death of some kind. The more recently built towns don’t have so many, but even they can have ghost stories! I heard one about a builder who was killed by work equipment, and he supposedly appears if the safety checks haven’t been thorough enough…

there’s many more places in the UK which have special myths relating to their history or a particular mythological beast or legendary creature associated with them; the area I’m in has many stories about the Green Man, faeries and witches in particular :Tb also hotels that claim to have ghosts are very popular and often more expensive than regular ones!

(when I was a kid I was more scared of the faeries than the witches…)

Misnaming aside (England does not a UK make...) I actually really do like the caricature of the UK! A lot of the personality-of-the-nation observations are really dead on, although frankly I think it’s a little rose-tinted (and I will fight you to the death on the point of fish and chips being delicious). The fact that he’s critically tsundere and ghost obsessed is all too adorably real. As for the whole EU thing, the country really seems to be massively split about it… it’s scary…
