4-18am asked: How far ahead into TPOH do you usually plan? Like, do you already know the story start to end, or do you find that you only have the outline of X amount of pages?? Or something else entirely?
not sure how to describe it: I know the story start to end, in the sense that always I knew how it began, how it would end, and most of the Big Stuff that Happens in the middle. However, over time I have shuffled some of the Middles around, and while now they’re in a pretty 99% set order I’m always willing to let the story say ‘actually mate we’re doing this bit now’ because this thing is the boss of me, not the other way around. Likewise I have certain pages all set out in my head, and have from the start, but on the whole I do thumbnails chapter by chapter so that I have a fluid visual narrative without trapping myself too far ahead of time. I also have to account for the fact that I’m still learning, and what I thumbnail now will not be as good as something I could thumbnail in the future, so forcing myself to thumbnail the whole comic before I started was never something I wanted to do, because I knew it would want to change it later and this story is so sodding long I would have had to wait like, 10 years to start.
Anonymous asked: HOW do you keep your inspiration from flying out the widow to continue TPoH?? or do you have to force out a new page every week? AND do you have plans for the story or do you come up with things as you go?
Actually, it’s one of the reasons I do all this fanart and have TpatJ on the go as well- which might seem crazy, but it’s true! I find having more than one project avoids having any one of them become a ‘chore’. If I don’t feel like I’m ‘in the zone’ for one story, I can work on another, and allowing myself to venture into doodling stuff that I like just for the hell of it doesn’t just let me learn new stuff, it keeps my love of drawing alive! I guess the danger I’ve seen a lot of people I worked with fall into is that drawing became just work; the only reason they drew was for work. Having weak hands I can understand this all too easily, as by the time you’ve finished what you have to draw you’re too mentally and physically fatigued to draw what you would like to draw. I’m in a bizarre, very lucky position where I can just about structure my time to accommodate both, and I find that it’s important to make time for the ‘like’ part for the very reason you’re describing. If I only drew TPoH, I would start to find it frustrating, draw much slower, love it less, and it would gradually pollute the story. I wouldn’t make it faster, I would make it worse. As for the story, gosh yes it is planned! But as with many things, only in parts- the joining up sometimes happens as it goes, but the majority of it and biggest scenes have been set since day one.

The Caves of Introspection are a place in TPoH which I’m not sure will actually end up being in the comic but I drew this rando character hanging out there anyway and I like her.
