No, it would be a talky, as per most movies these days :) but Arthur is a silent movie character, so no, he wouldn’t talk.
You do hear him at one point, however.
I’m amazed at how many people keep sending asks about the full feature SKIP idea, but just to give you a better idea of what I meant by SKIP being ‘an abbreviation of the idea’: I basically took the concept of a love story crossed with jumping through film genres and ran with that, keeping it to the two main characters, Mesi and Arthur.
The atmosphere and morale behind the full feature, however, would be very different. The entire story and set up is different, and the ending… well, I’ll just say the ending isn’t the same either.
These are just a couple of very crappy semi-board/concept doodles that might give you an idea of what it feels like in my head.
Did you know that Arthur was originally designed for 3D?
I came up with the idea for SKIP at VFS after one of my character design homework assignments got out of hand; we had to design three characters for a 3D movie, but because my characters always boss me around I ended up writing the entire film. I liked the main two so much that I ended up adapting the idea into the 3 minutes short as my final film.
I still want to make the full feature some day.

Okay so I’m hauling my way through my archives for pre-production stuff, and I found this dude, The Bandit, who I really love and I’m very sorry wasn’t in SKIP but them’s the breaks.
He was in one of the original versions of the film, and in the more refined storyboard for quite a long time- so, yeah, here’s the version that didn’t make it! The gag was that, since Arthur is a black and white movie character, the bandit would freak out and think he was a ghost.
Of course, people didn’t get the joke with a colourless storyboard…
I do think it would have worked in the end, but I’m much happier with the ending it has now for a multitude of reasons, and animating that shawl would have been a real killer. Anyway, thought you might like to see some of the process :)
Oh and here’s a little bonus early colour theory for the film as a whole-

If you ever wondered what my drawings tend to look like when I’m animating-

(not animating him right now this is just how I draw when I’m sketching super fast)
anyway yeah that’s the last one I’m off now gottadoalotofstuffyikes
WHAT THE……THIS IS NUTS. mod mad you are so so talented.
heres the link to the Vimeo for higher quality. someday SPG will be lucky enough to have as good of an artist as you do something like this for us.how much do you charge an hour…..
I…
I…
I…
…
I DON’T KNOW. LET ME GET BACK TO YOU ON THAT.
But in all sincerity if you ever did want me to animate something for you I’d be delighted, only I do work full time as a storyboard artist at a studio right now so I would either have to wait until my time at that job has run out or it would have to be done at the weekends INCREDIBLY SLOWLY. Also when I made this I had access to the school’s resources so… ahaha, aha, ha, oh god. This doesn’t sound good at all does it let’s start over.
Okay. In a nutshell. I WOULD LOVE TO MAKE SOMETHING FOR YOU GUYS. IT WOULD BE AN HONOR. I HAVE NO IDEA HOW I WOULD DO IT BUT THAT’S A MINOR DETAIL THAT I CAN WORK AROUND.
Also please feel free to just call me Mod I’m dying someone send help…
