Anonymous asked: I've been trying to look him the info with no clear answer but I thought you may know. Is Gladstone’s mom still canonly alive? Random info I've read has his father is probably gone but it's open ended on what happened to Daphne Duck.

it’s a tricky one hey- the headcanon version I have is a sort of blend of the Barks version and the Don Rosa version; that his parents were Goosetave Gander and Daphne Duck, but they died in the fashion described by Barks (which tbh could well tie into/be supported by Rosa’s The Sign of the Triple Distelfink story)-

My reasoning for this is simply that the Duck Family very often has big reunions and even obscure relatives are included in things like Christmas specials- but we never see Daphne or Goosetave. They aren’t even mentioned in conversation, and this is strange considering how Daphne was so closely related to Donald- in fact, the only stories I know that really feature Daphne in any way are The Sign of the Triple Distelfink and part of the Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck- both showing events in the comparatively distant past.

Anyway, I think when you’re presented with the fact that much older characters like Grandma and Scrooge are still kicking, it leads me to think that something happened to them to remove them from the picture so absolutely (and Barks is pretty much the Go To for duck canon even if the family tree shifted about).

I’ve been thinking alot about why of all the pairings Gladstone has been shown to have this one works. It’s not about shipping for the sake of shipping. It’s about the sincere merging of their energies of who they are as “people” that makes me believe in both the potential they bring within the context of the story and a certain emotional satisfaction outside of that context.

And it’s beyond the trope we’ve seen in his other relationships where he’s paired with a lucky or unlucky lady and must sacrifice his luck in some way in order for the relationship to progress. On the contrary with Magica, he never has to change a thing. And he likewise compliments her well.

Here we have to two most powerful characters in the Disney Duckverse and it’s funny that their power comes from a supernatural source. Both Donald (in the case of Gladstone) and Scrooge (in the case of Magica) are characters who’s will is so strong that the antagonist where external must almost always start with an uphill battle. So it’s no wonder these two were imbued with magical abilities. Where Magica is concerned her power is about discipline, learned skill. Control. Order. Gladdy has a different battle. Thrive in chaos. He never knows when, he doesn’t know how, he only knows his luck will provide. 20 to 1 that’s why he enters all those damn giveaways & sweepstakes. To try to create some order out of it.

Because of this intensely mystical trait in both characters, they do things to one another that other characters they interact with can’t really do giving the same effort. He could enhance or hinder her. Make her efforts great or see to her failure, depending on the whimsy of the umbrella theory and his own emotional investment. She could take the core of his identity, his luck, shock his narrative and completely emasculate him. Or she could help him form a stronger sense of self by simply exposing him to the magical world and planting the concept that you are not the sum of your magic.

But if exposed to his vulnerability, she’d probably gaslight him. Let’s be real.

And that’s the other thing I like about them. They can. But they don’t and they probably wont. Suspending myself and other observers in this gelatinous potential of Magicstone. I live for that sort of inspiration.

well see I probably give a false impression because you guys see very few of the sketches I do- very often for warm up or just for practice between work I sketch expressions, especially ones that I find compelling or difficult to draw (which are, to be fair, often the same thing). I look at photographs of real animals (not necessarily ducks and geese, but humans and other creatures too) to get an idea of the muscles that move and what happens to the eyes, cheeks etc. during certain grimaces- for these particular studies I actually looked at coyotes and wolves! I also end up pulling the face I’m drawing, which looks weird but actually is helpful because you can feel what is going on in your face. I find profiles difficult too, so I draw those a lot! That’s the only advice I can give on that (I never quite get it the same twice though…)

As for the second anon, I do draw in pencil and scan in sometimes, but my left hand is better at digital and that’s the hand I use for most of my sketches, so mostly these days I start with a silhouette blob and then rough over on another layer (that last picture probably describes that method best)- I find this is a good way to draw because I can make sure the image ‘reads’ and the body language is understandable even without expression or dialogue, and I can hint at contouring without getting too bogged down in perfection. Sometimes it’s more like a line sketch? It depends on what’s going on and if there are two characters interacting sometimes lines help with things like mass displacement;
