for that last anon! - WDC277 Carl Barks

queenburd asked: hey Mod!! seeing as ur my number one source for gladstone content, I was wondering if you knew if Gladstone (Or any of the cast! Its been a REALLY long time since I watched Ducktales) played instruments in canon? (as opposed to hitting some random notes and it coming out great GLADSTONE) also, I was wondering if your latest comic was in the same continuity as the other Magica/Gladstone comics you made, or just the canon comics. Thanks!

Sure! Gladstone is canonically claimed to be the ‘champion ukulele player of Duckburg’ in one of Carl Barks’ comics, Good Canoes and Bad Canoes-

as for the continuity of my comics, I guess I try to write them so they can either be stand alone or linked to one another- the canon comics sort of have the rule that everything gets set back to a certain default. Even if the ducks have gradually evolved and had character development, there are never any huge shifts; Donald never marries Daisy, Gyro never dies from blowing himself up, and none of them age! Imagine how weird it would be if they did? So yeah, I go from the same perspective- namely, Gladstone and Magica will always be the characters they are recognized to be at the beginning (and in some way the end) of the doodle comics I write; whether or not the previous doodle comics ‘have happened’ to them is up to you as the reader!

Anonymous asked: re-read that "sorcereress's apprentice" and have a few questions! first- is that bit with Scrooge talking about scaling stormy mountains and making wonderful mistakes in the beginning foreshadowing? and second- that list of things that Gladstone says he's summoned, I recognise the tidal wave and the tornado, but did he really summon a meteor in the comics?

hehe! thanks for noticing that foreshadowing, it was definitely on purpose, and yes! he actually causes a meteor to fall in more than one story (there’s one where he’s conned by Donald into buying land that has no gemstones, and a meteor made of diamonds falls right onto his patch), and there’s this Carl Barks classic where he’s got to boil a pint of water in as short a time as possible;

there’s a couple of stories featuring him and shooting stars/meteors, which I guess figures, what with the whole wishing thing

holy smokes, it took a bit of digging to find them but you’re completely right! it basically outright says that the helmet turns folk nasty in The Golden Helmet (W OS  408-02), and even if Gladstone’s a bit of a pill in the Lost Charts of Columbus (D 94144) you couldn’t say that his behaviour is out of his usual character- and he clearly doesn’t care about owning everybody or making them do what he wants like the others. Maybe he does have an immunity to curses!

In which case, kind of makes me think my answer to this question-

might be that it’s a good thing that Scrooge has got a relative like Gladstone knocking about, just in case… ( though I think he’s been hoarding things like that for a looong time in the comics, so)

just one of the cutest sequences Carl Barks ever drew with Scrooge (“Micro Ducks from Outer Space” US 65, 1966)
