Anonymous asked: it's wild how you don't ever sexualize the duck characters like they are 100% on the nose cute cartoon ducks and yet??? you have so much chemistry and tension? but it doesn't feel weird it just feels, like, 'real', y'know?
oh gosh :’D being faithful enough to the characters to have it called ‘real’ is a massive compliment, thank you, that’s all I want to achieve
also thanks bc I don’t want to sexualise any of the duck folks I’m just a hopeless romantic I swear
Anonymous asked: hey uncle mod, this might be dumb or just, idk it's so small and I feel stupid even for being hurt by it, but someone recently just made fun of the fact that I like something and draw and write about it a lot- but it's a safe space for me, creating and thinking about that subject. It's just fanart and theories and such, but the world is so bad rn and when I see you being a pro artist and still geeking out making fanart it it's so energizing and comforting- do you ever have to deal with cynicism?
anon, I’m so sorry; it really does hurt when people do that, and half the time these people have no idea how to create things, which is why it’s all they can do to attack people who do in an attempt to make themselves, in some way, significant. It sucks! And it will hurt, for a while, but don’t let them destroy your love for your subject. Take time to talk with friends about it, cry if you need to. You will recover and each time it gets a little easier to do so; especially when you have folks like Alex Hirsch who can spout little pieces of wisdom like this-
It’s great having this kind of attitude put into words to follow, and he put it better here than I ever could. Don’t let them get to you friendo- the reason I can and still am drawing as much and as often as I do is because the satisfaction in making art For Fun and the happiness it’s bringing people compels me to create far and above any other incentive. The world’s going to hell; as long as you’re not hurting anyone take joy in what you love and stuff the rest. Create good stuff: destroy your enemies (p.s. the best part? The easiest way to stop people like that from getting to you AND annoy the hell out of them is to make more stuff! If you have the ability to block them do that too; keep doing what you do and ignore them entirely = The Ultimate Comeback)
Anonymous asked: Hey Mod fyi the public comment thing for net neutrality ended this summer. Now our options are emailing the pricks in charge of the FCC and contacting our congresspeople and senators and telling them to get Ajit Pai to stop. There's also protests happening today (12/7) at Verizon stores! The vote for this nonsense is 12/14 so we're getting close to seeing if anybody listens to citizens or not.
oh dang, thanks for the update! you heard the anon folks, let’s get cracking!
Anonymous asked: uncle mod thank you for being so Good there is so much UnGood at the moment and you just, you make things not so UnGood. also not a request just to say I love those little alt Ducktales design comics with 2D wrap-around shadow Magica! I hope the show uses something like that it's such a great idea :D
oh, oh shucks buddy i love you. I am also aware of the UnGood and it is a big scary but maybe we can all huddle down in this pile of cuddly ducks and weather it out together
also I was thinking of drawing a real quick ‘nother one of those shadow Magica comics maybe I’ll do that next
Anonymous asked: hey uncle mod i have a dilemma i need to share that i need help with. i have a character ive spent a lot if time on (years, mentally), but ive noticed theres many ocs who look similar to him. one of them ive seen even has a similar job, although their personalities are different. i havent taken much (if any) influence from any of them; however i dont want to be accused of copying. changing his design would be hard tho bc its pretty established. should i change his appearance or keep it the same?
stay true to the character and your story- whether its design or personality, the best thing you can do in these cases is just listen to the character and be honest about them and their creation when people ask- I had a lot of ‘have you read Saga?’ and ‘oh! nice FLCL ref’ when I first made RGB, neither of which were influences on him or the story! (I still haven’t read Saga…) heck, I didn’t even know object heads were a whole thing until I started TPoH! people are always going to draw comparisons and make assumptions, especially when you’re starting out, but when you’re going strong and you have established who the characters are, what your direction is, what their individual voice is etc. you will worry about it less, and people will compare less! you will still get it, but it will be more of an ‘oh, I wonder if that influenced their character/story…’ and the attitude will usually be that these influences are additive, not derivative.
It’s a frustrating thing, that last point; people are quick to assume that characters/stories which are similar to existing ones are in some way ‘extractions’ of them, and therefore are less than the originals. In fact very often these characters have multiple, very personal influences from many sources including the life of the individual who created them, and therefore are an amalgamate which can easily add up to something or someone who is as equal a ‘person’ as the single entity they are being held up to.
Anonymous asked: I just worked my way through all your doodle comics and my god, I know it's like a short one but that 'eavesdropping' one really hit me in the face with how similar Gladstone and Scrooge are in terms of people resenting them for their luck/money so thanks for that I'd never realised it before!
I KNOW RIGHT it’s like, once you see it you really can’t unsee it
in comparison to scenes like this from the Life and Times (reads left to right)
and I mean, tell me you don’t see the similarities here (left, an early Gladstone by Carl Barks, right, young Scrooge by Don Rosa)
the main difference is that while most of the time Scrooge’s reaction to this sort of envy is that of aggressive defiance and throwing a fit, Gladstone’s is either aloof disinterest, rubbing it in their faces or just… being sad about it :’(
Anonymous asked: Eh, in my experience as an italian I can tell you that even tho we use garlic in some recipes it's not nearly as important as non-italians think it is? I may be biased because I'm from the north, but that's my two cents. (My deepest condolences to your tomato allergic friend)
go figure! now I think of it I’ve had a lot of Italian food that doesn’t have garlic in it, but then, I haven’t been to Italy to experience it firsthand… and yeah he’s from the South and everything is tomato :’D
Anonymous asked: Ah mod I’m so sorry! I was on mobile and went to copy the link to your newest comic and -apparently- tumblr mobile changed last update and the copy button isn’t first anymore. The report button is! Im so sorry I apparently accidentally reported it.
Anonymous asked: So, a while ago, you sorted RGB, Hero, Arthur, and Mesi into their Hogwarts houses. But where would your other main character for The Property of Hate go?
oh that sounds fun cool okay and I’ll put RGB and Hero in the set too;
Hero = Hufflepuff
RGB = Slytherin
Assok = Griffindor
Dial = Griffindor
TOby = Hufflepuff
Julienne = Ravenclaw
Melody = Hufflepuff
Tinker = Ravenclaw
Tailor = Slytherin
Cell = Slytherin
Click = Griffindor
As ever, Madras and Magnus are not characters that I created! They are wonderful cameos that I love and treasure! So their creators EGGS and 0chromo would have to field the answers for those two! <3
