Tangle Foot Comic on Tumblr

I really hope nobody minds my reblogging my own work, but I had a mysterious influx of watchers recently and noticed that this ol’ thing was doing the rounds again. And my goodness but it has a lot more notes than the last time I clapped eyes on it. Anyhow, I’ve always wanted to have it on my blog given that it’s probably what brought the majority of you lovely people here in the first place. So here ‘tis.

I guess I’m in a reflective mood, these being the dying days of 2013 and all, but I gotta say; if having drawn a bunch of extremely silly dance poses turns out to be the whole of my legacy, I don’t think I’d mind one bit.

Hey tumblr culture lovers! So, I’ve been wondering about this for some time now but I haven’t been able to find an answer via my usual means of research, and I’m the first to point out my staggering ignorance in the big wide world of fancy-ass terminology, so maybe one of you can help me out?

I was wondering if there’s a name for the cute-glittery-gore art movement that I’m such a lover of. You know the stuff. Beautiful and pastel and shiny but also disturbing and visceral; sort of vore/sweetshop or Goya meets an exploded plastic factory style. Big stars in overly cutesy eyes with a distinct air of decay just to amp up the sugary tooth-rot factor. I love it, but can I search for it or read about it? Can I didgeridoo.

As much as I see it on my dash I’ve never seen a general term for the style in the tags, and it’s definitely got to have its own genre at this point with the amount of art I’ve seen.

So, er, yes, does anyone out there know if there’s a specific term for it?

EDIT: Apparently a common term is candy gore?? Just in case there are others wanting an answer :D I’m still open to other suggestions though?

Haunted Play House At The MoCA In Tokyo by Torafu Architects via Yatzer

This ‘Haunted House’ is not like any you will have seen before and comes in the form of a spooky gallery of paintings that at first seem ordinary but soon turn out to have some hidden surprises in store. The concept behind Torafu Architects’ ‘Haunted Play House’ is to challenge perspectives and norms where rules are broken as children are actually encouraged to run, shout and touch – activities usually forbidden in a gallery or a museum.

Art Story Kickstarter by Aaron Blaise & Chuck Williams

Sometimes a Kickstarter comes along and you want to go straight to the bank and withdraw everything you have and just throw all your money at the computer screen - this is one of those times.

Veteran Disney animators Aaron Blaise & Chuck Williams have joined forces to create something pretty magical - ART STORY!

It’s a story about an 11-year-old, meticulous boy, WALT, and his crazy, loopy GRANDPA — two complete opposites — who get stuck in a vast, imaginative WORLD OF PAINTINGS. Inside, they cross paths with a ruthless painted character determined to make it into our world. In order to get home and stop the villain, Walt and Grandpa have to set aside their differences, work together and navigate worlds where the rules can change around every corner.

It’s structured like a hilarious, character-driven, buddy picture (“Planes, Trains & Automobiles,” “I Love You, Man" etc.), but takes place INSIDE THE WORLD OF SOME OF THE GREAT MASTER PAINTINGS OF ALL TIME … where the characters change their appearance to match the style of each painting — and meet lots of wildly entertaining characters. It also explores and was inspired by that special relationship between a grandchild and their grandparent — not something you see often in films nowadays.

Joan Gratz gave us a great look into how the world of animation and fine art can blend in her Academy Award winning short, Mona Lisa Descending A Staircase. And I think Art Story is something that would take that to the next level.

Art Story looks and sounds like it could be a really great and thought provoking film. I highly recommend checking out and possibly donating to the films KICKSTARTER.

For more information check out a short interview that Aaron Blaise & Chuck Williams did over at Aint it Cool News.
