Her husband is dead, and considering how we never see Donald/Gladstone/Fethry's parents in any modern-time comics we can assume they're dead too. She OUTLIVED her own CHILDREN. She raised Donald (& prob. Della too, in DT). Imagine her feelings after Della disappeared. Picture her grief if something happened to Donald as well...
