Anonymous asked: Hi Uncle Mod! I just have a simple, yet important think to ask. Are you okay? I feel like everyone in the world is shaken up and stressed out at the moment, and if there's one person that needs this ballooning of stress the LEAST, it's you. Plus, I had a nightmare last night in which you were anxious and sad, so I was really scared and concerned for you. Don't apolagise if you have to take a break or something, because you deserve peace. Love you!
anon??? I love?? you????
but thank you my dude my pal my friend o’ mine I have been a bit stressed and tired lately but really I wouldn’t imagine more so than everyone else- all things considered. My hands are a bit janked up at the moment so I will be slow on extras, and I’m visiting my sister next week so there might be another week without TPoH coming up (sorry) so I guess I feel bad about that? But knowing how patient and kind you all are makes things so much easier and I will try to recover so I can bring myself back up to speed. Thanks buddy.
So I have folks asking about my process/what I count as a doodle comic a fair bit, and the answer is it kind of changes? mostly I guess doodle comics are a) fan comics of some sort and b) not ‘finished’ finished they usually have scribbly bgs or structure lines left in them. Mostly my drawing process is like above- a loose silhouette or line sketch, then some blocking in and refinement, complicated objects/establishing shots, and then line art last if I can be bothered ahaha um.
Generally I do thumbnails for all the pages and then work the dialogue over it, which I usually have a vague idea for but I always change it and try to streamline it as I go; I’m more visually driven, so I almost always start with image and then move on to the words. Sometimes (like the bottom image here) there are panels that I want to get down on the paper/screen before they melt out of my brain, so I just start and let the energy bubble out while it’s there.
sorry folks I was trying to get TPatJ updated today but a bunch of IRL things happened that kind of threw it out of the window- I will try to get those pages done and posted by the end of this week but my schedule just took an unexpected detour!
Julie Andrews has a new children’s television series on Netflix called Julie’s Greenroom where she teaches a group of puppet children known as “greenies” about the performing arts. If that wasn’t already good enough news for you, one of the show’s characters is gender-neutral.
The students are racially diverse and include Hank, a piano-playing prodigy who uses a wheelchair and Riley, who is gender-neutral.
“If pressed we’d say she’s a girl, but maybe not forever,” said Andrews’ daughter, Emma Walton Hamilton, who created the show with her mother. “We wanted to be diverse as possible.”
Aside from the greenies the series will feature celebrity guest stars such as Tituss Burgess, Chris Colfer, Idina Menzel and Carol Burnett.
“This project represents the fulfillment of a long held dream to educate children about the wonder of the arts,” Andrews said in a statement announcing the show.
I am here for this.
It has an episode where Spike, the black boy, is encouraged to write even though he insists that “no one” like him is a writer (the phrasing makes it very clear that it is a racial issue). And then the next episode is about the boys learning that ballet isn’t just for girls, and Hank learns that he can still dance, even in the chair.
Plus there’s music every episode and theater/exercise warm ups for kids! And all the puppets are by the Henson Company! My favorite so far is Fizz! She’s a precious girl who is never mocked for asking questions, is in fact encouraged to explore things. Plus, their overarching plot is putting on a musical about an Ogre that takes away “all the arts”. It’s a simply WONDERFUL series.
