i still don’t understand why recovery isn’t romanticized more. getting better after being at your lowest point? working hard and doing what it takes to feel safe again? knowing that occasional dips aren’t the end of the world? changing yourself and ridding your life of toxic behavior/people? i’m sorry that sounds better than any edgy miserable story i’ve ever heard.
blubird513 asked: Hi there Modmad! My name's blubird513, and i'm a big fan of your work as well as an artist myself. Anyways I wanted to ask, how did you develop your skills in world building, especially in your work of TPoH? What advice can you give for that?
a lot of reading, a lot of writing, and a lot of patience- very much a thing learned via doing and getting experience on the ground floor. I wish there was a book about it I could recommend but if there is one I don’t know it! just read a lot, write a lot, and listen to the characters/follow instincts you have- and do that basically forever.
evening reblog! did you see the good news? now you can have your own lovely trustworthy butterfly friend who will always be behind you 100% of the way! he’s got your back! he’ll follow you to the end of the earth! isn’t that swell? 8)
lachryphagy is the term used to describe the behaviour of tear drinking in nature, typically in environments - like the purvian amazon shown here - where sodium and other micronutrients are hard to find.
bees and butterflies need sodium for egg production and metabolic purposes, but their diets of nectar are low in salt. so the orange julia and sulfur yellow butterflies you see here turn to the salty tears of often stationary turtles and caiman.
and though the caiman and turtles seem to receive no reciprocal benefit from the interaction, they’re apparently happy enough to just help out. (x, x, x, x, x, x)
modmad asked: OH FRABJOUS DAY CALLOOH CALLAY you're taking requests?! I'll do my best! honestly I always love your stuff so I'd be happy with anything, but you know I'd love to see a sort of crossover of Alice in Wonderland with the ducks somehow. I think Donald would make a really cute Alice! Perhaps he could meet Panchito, the mad hatter, and Jose the mad march hare, er, parrot?
i was so pleased to hear you chime in on this round and what a STELLAR IDEA!! I want to play around with it more, I was really focused on this scene but now as I’m posting it my head’s bursting with the possibilities, I can see where you’re going with that @modmad you clever devil you…
YOU PUT SO MUCH EFFORT INTO THIS AND I’M SORRY I DIDN’T MEAN TO MAKE YOU DO SO MUCH WORK but i love it oh ym googness
Anonymous asked: Hi Mod, loving the new shirts! Interested in knowing if you would ever set up a UK based store at all? The shipping costs from USA to UK are a wee bit punchy on the purse.
(boy do I know it) perhaps one day! but the HUGE advantage of being with the cool folks of Topatoco is that they handle all the wrapping, shipping, even making of the things! And most of my readers are in the USA at present- but yes, I’d like that too, so y’know, who knows?
Anonymous asked: Just a fun thought! I was looking into superstitions around the world and thought, does Gladstine follow all of these superstitions strictly? Or does he change his manorisms depending on the belief of whatever country he is currently in? Because apparently sleeping with your head to the North/Wast is bad luck in Japan/Africa? And putting your shoes on a table is only bad luck in Britian? Whats your opinion?
hm, good question! I am not sure, because in different countries same things might have conflicted meanings in luck lore- I suspect he adheres to what he knows, and while he’s an authority on luck he very likely doesn’t know everything! but yes I think he’d follow the local guides to luck, as best he could!
