Strange fact number 4. I decided to learn the drums to be inconspicuous.

No. Really. My parents wanted me to pick up a second instrument (first was piano), and I was at a particularly shy stage of my life, but I loved the Beatles and Ringo was always my favourite. Then I thought “hey! The drummer always sits at the back, right? That way nobody will pay attention to me!”

Of course one lesson in I realise that if the drummer screws up EVERYONE ELSE IN THE BAND DOES and EVERYONE IN THE AUDIENCE KNOWS IT WAS YOUR FAULT.

I am the first to admit this was not one of my greatest moments of foresight in my life although I love drumming so it all worked out okay really.

Strange fact number 3. I cry at movies, but not in the places you’re supposed to.

A classic example would be the opening of Paprika; it’s just so beautifully constructed and cut together I always end up in tears, especially when the music pulls it all together.

Yes, I do cry at the sad parts in some movies, but not all of them. The films that I really do cry at are the ones that move me because they are just so stunningly beautiful and observant. Perhaps it’s also because it gives me just a glimmer of hope for the misbegotten travesty that is the human race when I see something that has been created out of someone’s sheer desire to share their vision and to make art for the sake of art instead of box office records.

Strange fact number 2. I have no idea who or what I am attracted to.

I have dated both guys and girls, and found I didn’t prefer either, but always ended up just feeling weird about the whole situation because I always preferred just being friends with them. If someone asked me out I would often say yes to make them happy and see how things went, but the longest relationship I was ever in was two weeks, no exaggeration.

The weird part about it is that I am a hopeless romantic, and as daft as it sounds I do believe in true love and even love at first sight. Perhaps it’s just that it hasn’t happened to me yet, but I’ve never even so much as had a crush on someone.

I’ve more or less come to the conclusion that I’m either asexual or so damned pansexual that instead of deciding to swing both ways I told physics to stop being a hater and consequently ended up in zero gravity for all eternity.

Ooookay, strange fact number 1. When I was about thirteen I was on a particularly bitchy horse during a riding lesson, which decided to buck me off when we were cantering around, but instead of doing what most horses do (which would be to bugger off and laugh at your sorry ass), it turned around and cantered back over me. Over and on my leg, to be specific.

It’s very rare for horses to ever tread on fallen riders, so my teacher didn’t believe me or the other students when we told her, so I was made to man the fuck up and get the fuck back on my horse. I spent the remainder of the lesson convinced that I had a broken leg but I at least finished the damned lesson.

Turned out I just had severe muscle trauma and some minor bone stress, but the teacher never doubted my integrity again (she kind of got her ass handed to her by the parents who’d been watching afterwards).
