I’m used to associating this sort of heavy creepy distortion type audio as being achieved by internal studio mixing. Picking sections, warping them, reversing, repeating, all that sort of thing done with the board tools and programming suites. I didn’t stop to think that the same sort of effects could be achieved PHYSICALLY by fucking with the playback tools and the storage mediums themelves. It’s incredibly clever, especially when they introduce the cut-apart and reconstructed vinyl platters, it becomes the audio equivalent of cut-paste collaging or magnetic poetry. It takes something as ethereal and insubstantial as music, and makes it as tangible as sculpture.

Everyone I know who grew up watching this show has some sort childhood trauma regarding this scene (me included)
I remember playing a game called Groke when I was small and whoever was the Groke had to walk around really slowly with that expression, and if they got close to you you had to slow down because you were too cold to move and someone would have to come to hug you to warm you up so you could run away or distract the Groke away from you (if you got touched you had to freeze and then you were the Groke next) but it was interesting because the person doing the ‘chasing’ wasn’t allowed to be fast and somehow that made it super intense and everyone got really into it o__o
